A recent trip to the Midwest to visit my wife’s family and hometowns led to a brief reunion with a long, lost friend. Several months ago I was reflecting on the many people I’ve been fortunate in knowing through my years. This friend entered my mind. I had known he married a dear friend of mine, but life happened and we all moved on.
However, through the power of Google, I was able to locate him and discovered he moved from Southern California to Lee’s Summit, Missouri many years ago. This friend happens to be, without a doubt, one of the best pinstripers and gold leaf artists of this era: Bob Bond.
Bob and I go way back to the 1970’s when he opened his first shop in Van Nuys, California on Kester and Oxnard. Everyone who had a hot rod, boat, truck- you name it- had it done by Bob. Cruise night was at its peak on Van Nuys Blvd. It was also the birth of the mini pick-up. My Datsun was one of the first mini pick-ups to be customized by Bob.
Bob’s Chevy Luv was the first mini pick-up conversion. Along with the ultimate striping and Gold Leafing, it featured a straight thru access from the cab to the back into the bed. You couldn’t miss it- it was all over the Los Angeles area!
Bob went on to paint and stripe for some of the hottest movie and rock stars of the 70’s and 80’s, including Billy Gibbons of ZZTop.
His forte in Gold Leafing was breathing new life back into vintage fire trucks and bank safes with his artistry. He continues to perfect his craft, as well as create new car art on canvas. His magazine, Auto Art Magazine, has a wealth of information and is distributed worldwide.
I am fortunate to have reconnected with this true icon in the art and automotive world. If you would like to check out more about Bob Bond and his works of art and learn more about this cherished art form, visit www.bobbondart.com.
